Nursing Fundamentals

Course Number: 7243
Recommended Maximum Enrollment: 10
Recommended Hours of Instruction: 270-300
Prerequisite: Health Science I & Health Science II

Course Description:
This course is designed for students interested in medical careers where personal care and basic nursing skills are used. This course is an enhanced adaptation of the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) Nurse Aide I (NAI) curriculum and helps prepare students for the National Nurse Aide Assessment (NNAAP). Students who pass the NNAAP become listed on the NC NAI Registry. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include a required clinical internship in a long-term care agency. Healthcare agencies may require testing for tuberculosis and/or other diseases and a criminal record check for felonies related to drugs. Cooperative education is not available for this course. HOSA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences. Enrollment is limited per North Carolina Board of Nursing (BON) Administrative Rule 21 NCAC 36.0318(i), which requires the ratio of teacher to nurse aide students be 1:10 or less while in the clinical area. DHSR applies BON Rule to the classroom training area.

Nursing Fundamentals and Pacing Guide

Nursing Fundamentals Blueprint and Pacing Guide

Nursing Fundamentals will provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide Exam.  After completion of Nursing Fundamentals, each student will take an end of course exam known as the VOCAT.  If student maintains a 75 average, they will be eligible to take the North Carolina Nurse Aide Exam.  this exam will cost $101.00.  All students wanting to take the North Carolina NA exam must have a valid government or state issued picture ID, such as a drivers license.  They must also have a Social Security Card.  The Social Security Card cannot be laminated.  The student must be the one who has signed this card...Not the parent!

This class will be helpful to all students interested in the nursing field.  Most 2 year (Associate Degree) Nursing Programs require students complete Nurse Aide Training before they enter Nursing School.  Therefore, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is very important to students who want to pursue a career in nursing.

This class is not like other classes offered in the high school setting.  Students will be required to complete skills during our clinical rotation at Rutherford Regional, LTC Facility, and Hospice.  Skills will include such things as feeding patients, bathing or showering patients, changing adult diapers, dressing patients, helping patients to the bathroom, brushing patient's hair and teeth, and many other activities of daily living.  Because patients are counting on them, it is important students interested in Nursing Fundamentals be dependable, honest, caring, and hardworking.
